How to make clay mono prints.

Crafturgy.com is going to demonstrate how to create mono prints on clay!

I used underglazes and painted an abstract image on a plaster slab. I worked back into the image scratching out sections and adding black linear elements.

Next I took a chunk of low fire earthenware type clay and rolled it out. I used our handy dandy slab roller. Use a rolling pin or what ever method you chose.

Smooth one side of the clay. I used a rubber kidney.

THIS NEXT STEPS DID NOT WORK.  CHECK OUT HOW WE REMEDY THIS.

Place flattened clay on plaster underglaze painting. It had dried until there was no more pooling of the undergalze. Press clay onto design and hope it transfers.

mono7

NOPE !    Hmmmm back to the drawing board.

mono6

The clay surface was not wet enough so paint a layer of slip and try again.

mono5

Ok , is it going to work this time?

mono4

Place the slip prepared clay on the surface and apply pressure to transfer the design.    Wait 30 Minutes and pull the print.         Success !

The clay was still workable and moist and the mono printing so I used a cookie cutter and cut clay circles and made dishes on mini plaster hump molds.
